Woods with a Story

Wood is a material that has stood the test of time. It has been the key building component in ships, houses, storage barrels and even performance stages. The items that appear on this page are made from historical "witness" wood. This is a term used for a material that has been present, or involved in some traceable historical event, and thus was a "witness" to the historical event itself.

Pens Made from the Main Stage of
The House of Blues,
Sunset Strip, Hollywood CA.

Picture
Picture
I was very lucky to receive several pieces of wood from the main stage of the famous House of Blues in Hollywood, CA when it was demolished.
For twenty years, The House of Blues stage was host to countless artists. From the opening performance by Aerosmith in 1994, to the final act by Steel Panther in 2014, some of the more famous performers to have graced this stage include: James Brown, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Alice Cooper, The Damned, Bo Diddley, Snoop Dogg, Aretha Franklin, Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, GWAR, Etta James, Elton John, B.B. King, KISS, Lil Kim, Rihanna, Social Distortion, Britney Spears, Stevie Wonder, and ZZ top, just to name a few. On this stage in 2011, Prince played three shows in one night, and it was also where Tupac Shakur had his final recorded performance in 1996. The people who have "walked" on these pens is mind blowing!

The pens featured above were donated to the crew that took part in the demolition of the stage.

I do have limited quantities of this wood on hand, please ask for a custom pen if the one you like is not available!
Also, I have limited quantities of the other materials on this page. I have left the "sold" pens on the site to show what can be made.
Please don't hesitate to ask for anything that is already sold. Chances are excellent that a similar item can be custom made for you!

Nautical Pen in
Teak Decking from The USS California

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Finish: Antique Brass
Material: Old Growth Teak Decking
Origins: USS California
Ink Refill:  Parker™ Style
Description: USS California (BB-44) California was moored in Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 when the Japanese attacked the port, bringing the United States into World War II. The ship was moderately damaged by a pair of torpedoes and a bomb, but a fire disabled the ship's electrical system, preventing the pumps from being used to keep the ship afloat. California slowly filled with water over the following three days and eventually sank. Her crew suffered heavy casualties in the attack and four men were awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions during the attack. She was raised in April 1942, repaired and heavily rebuilt, and returned to service in January 1944.
The ship thereafter supported the amphibious operations conducted during the Pacific War, including the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign (though she was damaged in a collision with Tennessee and thus missed the Battle of Peleliu) and the Philippines campaign, during which she took part in the Battle of Surigao Strait. She was hit by a kamikaze during the invasion of Lingayen Gulf in January 1945, after repairs, joined the fleet supporting troops fighting on Okinawa during the Battle of Okinawa. Her crew took part in the occupation of Japan after the end of the war, and after returning to the United States via the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, was laid up in Philadelphia in 1946. She remained in the fleet's inventory until 1959, when she was broken up for scrap.

Ink Refill:  Parker™ Style
Description: USS Iowa (BB-61) is the lead ship of her class of Battleship.During World War II, she carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Algeria, en route to a crucial 1943 meeting in Tehran with Prime Minister Winston Churchill of Britain and Josef Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union. In 1944, Iowa shelled beachheads at Kwajalein and Eniwetok in advance of Allied amphibious landings and screened aircraft carriers operating in the Marshall Islands. She also served as the Third Fleet flagship, flying Adm. William F. Halsey's flag at the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. During the Korean War, Iowa was involved in raids on the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets. She was reactivated in 1984 as part of the 600-ship Navy plan and operated in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets to counter the recently expanded Soviet Navy. In April 1989, an explosion of undetermined origin wrecked her No. 2 gun turret, killing 47 sailors. Decommissioned permanently in 1990, she has been moved to Berth 87 at the Port of Los Angeles, and in 2012, she was opened to the public as the USS Iowa Museum.
I personally purchased this wood while visiting the museum. While speaking with a restoration expert, I was able to purchase some of the old decking that he had set aside just for pen makers. Unfortunately, I have no formal Certificate of Authenticity to accompany this pen, other than my word that I personally obtained the material from the source, myself.

Teak Decking from The USS New Jersey

Picture

Picture
Finish: Antique Brass
Material: Old Growth Teak Decking
Origins: USS New Jersey
Ink Refill:  Parker™ Style
Description: USS New Jersey (BB-62) ("Big J" or "Black Dragon")[5] is an Iowa-class battleship, and was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named after the US state of New Jersey. New Jersey earned more battle stars for combat actions than the other three completed Iowa-class battleships, and was the only US battleship providing gunfire support during the Vietnam War.
During World War II, New Jersey shelled targets on Guam and Okinawa, and screened aircraft carriers conducting raids in the Marshall Islands. During the Korean War, she was involved in raids up and down the North Korean coast, after which she was decommissioned into the United States Navy reserve fleets, better known as the "mothball fleet". She was briefly reactivated in 1968 and sent to Vietnam to support US troops before returning to the mothball fleet in 1969. Reactivated once more in the 1980s as part of the 600-ship Navy program, New Jersey was modernized to carry missiles and recommissioned for service. In 1983, she participated in US operations during the Lebanese Civil War.
New Jersey was decommissioned for the last time in 1991 (after serving a total of 21 years in the active fleet), having earned a Navy Unit Commendation for service in Vietnam and 19 battle and campaign stars for combat operations during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Lebanese Civil War, and service in the Persian Gulf. After a brief retention in the mothball fleet, she was donated to the Home Port Alliance in Camden, New Jersey, and began her career as a museum ship 15 October 2001.

Ancient Bog Oak

_Finish: Chrome over Brushed Chrome
Material:  Bog Oak
Ink Refill: Parker™ Style
Description: Hold a piece of history in your hand! This oak tree grew in Europe somewhere between 4000 - 6000 years ago. It fell over into a peat bog that is naturally devoid of oxygen. This preserves the wood, and imparts a very dark coloring which on close inspection reveals shades of black and green. This process is actually the early stages of fossilization, and if it had been left undisturbed for another million years or so would have turned into coal. Natural pores in the grain show through imparting a very distinct look to this pen. Certificate of Authenticity included with purchase.
